Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center
The performing arts destination known today as Uptown Knauer Performing Arts Center has its origins in a historic landmark building in downtown West Chester, Pennsylvania. The building was originally the Major John C. Groff Memorial Armory, constructed in 1916 on North High Street as a home for local National Guard units. Its architect, Philip C. Johnson, designed several armories in southeastern Pennsylvania during that era. Over many decades, the armory also served as a community space — hosting dances, conventions, fairs, and local organizations long before it became a theatre.
By May 2012, the National Guard had relocated to a new facility, and the historic armory was declared surplus property. In December 2015, Uptown! Bravo Theatre, LLC, purchased the building with a vision to transform it into a performing arts center. A major rehabilitation project began in 2016, reimagining the former military space into a vibrant cultural venue while preserving its historic character.
In 2017, the newly renovated venue opened its doors as Uptown Knauer Performing Arts Center, bringing professional-level theatre, music, dance, film, comedy, and more to the heart of West Chester’s Historic District — helping to anchor the borough’s cultural economy and community life.
