Historic Riverfront Park on the Delaware River
Fort DuPont State Park sits along the Delaware River and the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal just south of Delaware City. The park blends open green space, waterfront scenery, and historic military landscapes, creating one of the most unique historical parks in the Delaware State Park system.
Visitors can explore wide lawns, walking trails, and scenic river views while learning about the site’s military past. The park remains open year-round and offers both quiet nature experiences and access to Delaware’s colonial-era river corridor.
Military History of Fort DuPont
The original Fort DuPont was constructed in 1863 during the American Civil War as part of a defensive system protecting the Delaware River and the important port cities of Philadelphia and Wilmington.
Over time, the fort expanded with new gun batteries and defensive systems designed to guard the river against naval attack. These installations included artillery emplacements and mine-control facilities that monitored underwater defensive minefields.
The fort remained an active military installation through several periods:
- Civil War defenses beginning in 1863
- Endicott-era coastal defenses built between 1897 and 1904
- World War II mobilization and training site
- Prisoner-of-war camp holding captured German soldiers
After World War II, the property was declared surplus and later transferred to the State of Delaware, eventually becoming a public park.
Recreation and Outdoor Activities
Today the former military base has been transformed into a public park offering both recreation and historic exploration. Popular activities include:
- Walking and biking trails
- Fishing along the Delaware River
- Picnicking and open recreation areas
- Tennis and basketball courts
- Historic self-guided walking tours
The park’s layout still reflects the original military campus, with large parade grounds and historic structures scattered across the property.
A Historic Gateway Along the Delaware River
Fort DuPont State Park sits near several other historic landmarks along the river, including Fort Delaware State Park on Pea Patch Island and Fort Mott State Park in New Jersey, which together once formed a defensive triangle protecting the Delaware River shipping channel.
A Park Where History Meets the River
Today, Fort DuPont State Park offers visitors a chance to explore Delaware’s military history, scenic riverfront landscapes, and open green spaces in one location. Its combination of historic defenses, public recreation, and river views makes it a distinctive destination within the Delaware State Parks system.
