During the Gilded Age\, the American silver industry emerged out of the rapid growth of the mining industry in the West in the late nineteenth century\, and artworks often came to express complicated ideas about politics\, extractive industry\, and land. Based on research in her forthcoming book\, The American Silverscape\, Dr. Christine Garnier\, assistant professor of art history\, University of California\, Santa Barbara\, will only scratch the surface of this complex historical moment through Tiffany & Co.’s dinner and dessert service for the family of Comstock billionaire John Mackay\, all made from silver extracted from the Consolidated Virginia Mine in Virginia City\, Nevada. \nThe Research at Winterthur series\, presented by the Library\, Research Fellowship Program\, and Continuing Education\, showcases new projects and publications that tap into our rich collections and resources\, unveiling innovative perspectives for exploring the fascinating stories that objects can tell about people and our shared past. Registration required. DESCRIPTION:This fall marks the 150th birthday of Marian Coffin\, the pioneering woman of landscape architecture who designed gardens at Winterthur\, Gibraltar\, Mt. Cuba\, the University of Delaware Green\, and many others in the Delaware Valley and beyond. This also marks the 10-year anniversary of the launch of the University of Delaware’s Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program. \nTo celebrate these milestones\, Winterthur\, the UD Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program\, and Preservation Delaware\, the non-profit that oversees the Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar\,  have developed a two-day symposium to bring awareness to her remarkable achievements\, her influence on landscapes and the relevance of the field of landscape architecture and historic garden and landscape preservation today. \nClick here for more information and to register.
