DESCRIPTION:Unraveling ‘The Cause of Much Chagrin’: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Historic Shark and Ray Exploitation through Marine Shagreen Museum Objects \nDr. Rachel M. Winter will speak about her ongoing research into identifying the seas and species exploited to produce marine shagreen using nearly two dozen objects in Winterthur’s collections she studied in consultation with Winterthur scientists\, conservators\, and curators. Dr. Winter’s project “‘The Cause of Much Chagrin’: Marine Shagreen as a Tool for Elasmobranch Historical Ecology\,” was funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowship at Winterthur in 2025. \nThe Research at Winterthur series\, presented by the Library\, Research Fellowship Program\, and Continuing Education\, showcases new projects and publications that tap into our rich collections and resources\, unveiling innovative perspectives for exploring the fascinating stories that objects can tell about people and our shared past.
