In 1870/1871\, Paris and its people were besieged\, starved and forced into surrender by the Germans. They were then imperiled by a commune established by radical Republicans which was ultimately crushed by the French Army after bloody street battles. Smee tells of the dramatic days through the eyes of the great Impressionists – some trapped in Paris and those outside the city. DESCRIPTION:DelArt Executive Director Molly Giordano will be in conversation with Victoria Johnson\, author of Glorious Country: How Frederic Church Brought the World to America and America to the World\, at the History Book Festival in Lewes. This first-ever biography of Frederic Church shows how the virtuosic artist and adventurer brought the wider world to a young America while putting American art on the international map. Johnson is an acclaimed author and Hunter College professor whose book American Eden was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Held since 2017\, the History Book Festival is the first and only book festival in the United States devoted exclusively to history. Free Seats are available on a first-come basis.

SUMMARY:Lewes Public Library Talk – Transcendent: Landscapes of the Hudson River School presented by Joseph Lewis Soler II
DESCRIPTION:Take a behind-the-scenes look at the Delaware Art Museum’s fall special exhibition\, Transcendent: Landscapes of the Hudson River School. Drawn primarily from the rich collections of The New York Historical and supplemented with key loans from public and private collections\, the show introduces visitors to the tradition of landscape painting that flourished in the United States in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Transcendent explores these nationally beloved paintings through the lens of Transcendentalism\, a 19th-century movement that emphasized the spiritual connection between humans and the natural world. The exhibition also examines the belief of period artists\, writers\, and theologians who viewed nature to be the primary locus of the divine. Though they do not overtly illustrate religious scenes or texts\, Hudson River School paintings were created by deeply religious artists who understood their works to reflect their faith.  \nThe talk will be presented by Joe Soler\, Ph.D.\, who serves as DelArt’s Gallery Learning Assistant. He received his master’s degree and doctorate in Urban Education from Temple University.  Prior to DelArt\, he held a number of positions at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and is an adjunct professor at two colleges. \nImage: South American Landscape\, 1873. SUMMARY:Lewes Public Library Talk – Pyle and the Pre-Raphaelites presented by Katherine Feldkamp
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about Pyle and the Pre-Raphaelites\, an exhibition that brings together two of the Delaware Art Museum’s signature collections: the founding collection of work by Howard Pyle\, the artist who created an American illustration tradition\, and Samuel Bancroft’s collection of British Pre-Raphaelite art\, which is the largest concentration of Pre-Raphaelite work outside of the United Kingdom. This exhibition premiers new research that reveals the men were far more intertwined than previously recognized and that Pyle was inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites before Bancroft began acquiring their work in 1890. By displaying Pyle’s illustrations for stories set in the Medieval and Early Renaissance eras alongside works by Pre-Raphaelite artists and their followers\, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti\, Edward Burne-Jones\, Walter Crane\, and William Morris\, this show articulates the extent to which Pyle was inspired by Pre-Raphaelite compositions he encountered in his early career as well as in Bancroft’s collection. Further\, this show demonstrates how Pyle’s exposure to original works of Pre-Raphaelite art shaped the birth and flourishing of American illustration.  \nThe talk will be presented by DelArt Curatorial Associate Katherine Feldkamp\, who curated Pyle and the Pre-Raphaelites.
