During the Gilded Age\, the American silver industry emerged out of the rapid growth of the mining industry in the West in the late nineteenth century\, and artworks often came to express complicated ideas about politics\, extractive industry\, and land. Based on research in her forthcoming book\, The American Silverscape\, Dr. Christine Garnier\, assistant professor of art history\, University of California\, Santa Barbara\, will only scratch the surface of this complex historical moment through Tiffany & Co.’s dinner and dessert service for the family of Comstock billionaire John Mackay\, all made from silver extracted from the Consolidated Virginia Mine in Virginia City\, Nevada. \nThe Research at Winterthur series\, presented by the Library\, Research Fellowship Program\, and Continuing Education\, showcases new projects and publications that tap into our rich collections and resources\, unveiling innovative perspectives for exploring the fascinating stories that objects can tell about people and our shared past. Registration required. SUMMARY:Spectroscopy as Cultural Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Roger Turner will present a talk highlighting the fascinating history of cultural practices and social groups on the field of spectroscopy\, the scientific study of how matter interacts with electromagnetic radiation. His talk introduces some of the hidden figures who helped make spectroscopy a powerful technique that scientists use to understand the compositions of cultural heritage objects—including paintings\, textiles\, archeological artifacts\, photographs\, contemporary art\, and much\, much more. Women like Clara Smith Craver created the books of chemical “fingerprints” that identify different materials\, while groups of scientists learned to how to do spectroscopy through summer courses at Fisk University\, a historically Black university. Surprising objects from the Science History Institute museum reveal that spectroscopists can be playful and silly\, while doing work that has transformed our understanding of art and archeology. Dr. Turner is the curator of instruments and artifacts at the Science History Institute in Philadelphia. \nThis is the keynote lecture for the IRUG Conference taking place at Winterthur October 7–9. IRUG is a group dedicated to the use of infrared and Raman spectroscopies applied to cultural heritage. Included with admission. Members free. \nRegister now.

DESCRIPTION:Join conservators and conservation graduate students from the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation for a hands-on workshop about how to care for your cherished objects in hazardous flood conditions. Participants will have the opportunity to learn a variety of processes from freezing and drying books to safely removing heavy\, wet textiles from flood waters. \n \nOffered in partnership with the University of Delaware’s Disaster Research Center\, this workshop commemorates the 60th anniversary of the devastating 1966 Florence Flood. This event prompted conservators from around the world to collaborate and recover books\, sculptures\, paintings\, and other important cultural heritage.
