Behind-the-Scenes Library Talk – Painter’s Folly: A Catalyst for Revolutionary Memory and American Art

Emma Leuschner will explore the history of Painter’s Folly, a c. 1856 Italianate mansion in Chadds Ford that later became home to Howard Pyle’s summer art school and a private studio for Andrew Wyeth. Drawing on archival research and showcasing materials from the Helen Farr Sloan Library & Archives, she will examine how the nearby Brandywine Battlefield influenced Pyle’s concept of “mental projection” and trace the house’s role in the development of the Brandywine School of Art.

Emma Leuschner is a writer and preservation advocate whose research on Painter’s Folly has received recognition from Preservation Pennsylvania and the Delaware County Heritage Commission.
