Chester County History Center – History & Visitor Information
The Chester County History Center (CCHC) is one of Pennsylvania’s oldest and most respected history museums and research institutions. It was founded in 1893 by local citizens dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the region’s rich history.
In its early years, the organization focused on collecting historical artifacts and advocating for the preservation of Chester County’s past. Over time, its collections expanded dramatically, eventually encompassing manuscripts, newspaper clippings, rare books, artifacts, photographs, and archives that document three centuries of local history.
Since 1942, the CCHC has been housed at 225 North High Street in West Chester, Pennsylvania, in a complex that blends two historically significant buildings. The older portion — known as Horticultural Hall — was built in 1848 and served as a community hub before becoming part of the museum. In the 1990s, the adjacent former YMCA building was incorporated into the site, creating a larger space for exhibitions, collections, and public programming.
Today, the History Center preserves more than 80,000 artifacts, 500,000+ manuscripts, 20,000+ volumes, and an expansive photo archive capturing life in southeastern Pennsylvania from the 1600s to the present.
What Visitors Will Experience
Museum Exhibits
The museum’s core and changing exhibits tell the story of Chester County’s development — from early Indigenous contact and colonial settlement through the American Revolution, industrial growth, and modern times. These displays feature artifacts, art, furniture, textiles, tools, and personal items that illustrate local life, culture, and civic transformation over 300+ years.
Permanent galleries explore:
- Indigenous and colonial encounters
- Daily life in the early settlement era
- Social reform movements
- Regional arts and craftsmanship
- Visible storage of over 900 artifacts from the 1600s to 1900s
Photo Archives & Library
The Photo Archives contains more than 100,000 historical photographs dating from the 1840s into the early 20th century. These images document people, landscapes, businesses, and events that shaped southeastern Pennsylvania.
The library offers researchers access to vast manuscript collections, county records, maps, newspapers, and genealogical resources. On-site appointments and research services are available, with options for digital document delivery and copy services.
