Things You Need To Know About 70s Music:
In 1976, The Beatles reached # 7 on the charts with Got To Get You Into My Life. It was a pretty cool achievement for a band that had broken up six years earlier. It was a single from the Rock and Roll Music compilation album.

1978 # 1 hit, You Don’t Bring Me Flowers, was a remix of two song versions by Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand. WAKY-AM/Louisville KY program director Gary Guthrie spliced the two versions together as a gift for his wife, who was a fan of both artists.

1973’s Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd began its 741 weeks in the top album charts. Money was the biggest single off the album, reaching #111 on the pop charts. (not a typo)

In 1978, Soundtracks rocked the carts – Night Fever, If I Can’t Have You and Stayin Alive from Saturday Night Fever hit number on the Billboard Charts, as did Grease and You’re The One That I Want from Grease.

1972 marked the deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin. Don McLean’s American Pie referenced three other rock deaths from the Day The Music Died (February 3, 1959) – Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper

    Your Complete 1960s Music Checklist

About Music of the Sixties: Things You Need To Know In 1960, New Orleans was the place to be apparently. Hits included Johnny Horton’s The Battle of New Orleans, Freddy Cannon’s Way Down Yonder In New Orleans, Gary US Bond’s New Orleans and Walking To New Orleans by Fats Domino scored in Billboard’s charts.

Chubby Checker’s The Twist hit number one on Billboard’s charts in 1960 and influenced quite a few “Twist” songs over the next few years, including Let’s Twist Again, Peppermint Twist, Twist and Shout, Twistin The Night Away, Slow Twistin’, Twistin’ Postman and Twistin’ Matilda, to name a few.

The epic Teenage Death song theme went into full gear in 1961 with Teen Angel by Mark Dinning.

1962’s Hey! Baby by Bruce Channel was made popular again in 1987’s hit film Dirty Dancing and was popular again thanks to DJ Otzi’s 2001 remix, a 39-year span. Tiny Tim’s Tiptoe Thru The Tulips ‘hit’ in 1968 was written in 1929, another 39-year stretch.

The Beatles had 12 songs in the Top 100 for the week April 4, 1964.

Rolling Stone named 1965’s Blowin In The Wind by Bob Dylan and I Can’t Get No Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones as the two Greatest Rock and Roll Songs of all Time in 2004 respectively. Most music fans, while admitting the Blowin In The Wind was significant, wouldn’t say the song ‘rocks’.

    World’s Worst Pop Music

Bad music and all of the worst songs are subjective, we admit.  Often, the songs on this are loved by many but hated even more by others.

This section is devoted entirely to the worst songs of all time. Well, maybe not the all-time worst written songs or worst performances of all time. Perhaps “Really irritating songs that used to be popular songs” would be a better title. On the other hand, there are people reading the list below and saying to themselves ‘these are the greatest hits of all time!”

These are songs that, admit it or not, we all knew and mostly liked when they first came out. These are songs that make us cringe when we hear them now in front of loved ones.
    What were we thinking?

How does one define a “bad song”?

Sometimes they are just too ‘catchy’ or we have heard them far too many times for a single lifetime. You may love a particular ditty and the person next to you may give you a look of horror, disdain, and even a little pity when they realize that you are enjoying that sound coming out of the speakers.

We’re not talking about music genres here. Parents/Adults have been whining about what the “kids” were listening to since the 1920’s. That nasty Charleston stuff that evolved into that Sinful Swinging, that enabled Elvis to gyrate, leading to Tina Turner showing some leg, Jim Morrison performing nude, Ozzie biting live bats,  the Sex Pistols urinating on stage, James Brown singing about his “Sex Machine”, and Eminem flipping the world “the bird” at the 2000 Grammys.

Don’t tell us “today’s music is terrible”. You sound like your mom talking about those long-haired, unkempt bad boys in “The Beatles”, or her mom harping about Elvis. Or those teachers who banned swing dancing at the school dances during World War II. Music marches in.

People like Pat Boone tried to make R & B/rock-n-roll acceptable to the masses, yet, for all his pop music success, his greatest achievement was the fathering of his daughter, Debbie Boone, who went on to record one of the most successful bad songs of all time, “You Light Up My Life”, lasting 10 weeks at Billboard’s number one, and over 20 weeks in the Top 40 in 1977. She won the Grammy for the best new artist as well. She never charted again, which is just fine for those of us who heard it, on average, a hundred thousand times that
    Summer of ’77.

(BTW – the 70s was the list filled the fastest, followed by the 2000s with the 90s close behind.)
(BTW2 – The further back we go, the more complaints we seem to get about the “worst” selections. Time is very kind to bad songs, apparently.)

    Siblings: Brother and Sister Songs

National Sibling Day is April 10

The US holiday was conceived by Claudia Evart to honor the memory of her brother and sister, who died very young. Since 1998, the governors of 49 states have officially issued proclamations to recognize Siblings Day in their state. The Siblings Day Foundation was incorporated in 1997 and achieved non-profit status in 1999.

Bobby Darin (1st Best New Artist Grammy Winner, for 1958, awarded in 1959) Bobby’s career started with a songwriting partnership with Don Kirshner. His first hit was written after a bet that he could not write a song that started out with the words, “Splish Splash, I was takin’ a bath.” Splish Splash, his first hit, sold over a million copies.
Henry Mancini (1st Grammy for Album of the Year) Henry made a name for himself getting the Grammy for the Peter Gunn Theme. He later went on to be nominated for more Grammys and Oscars. Grammy wins included Breakfast At Tiffany’s, Days of Wine and Roses, and The Pink Panther Theme. Oscar wins included  Breakfast At Tiffany’s, Days of Wine and Roses, Victor Victoria.
Domenico Modugno (Grammy for Record of the Year & Song of the Year) Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu (Volare) was the top song, and Domenico co-wrote it, so he didn’t mind when young singer Bobby Rydell recorded it in 1960, hitting number 4 on Billboard. Bobby’s version is the one most remembered today.
On February 3, 1959, a small-plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, killed three American rock and roll pioneers – Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson. This was “The Day The Music Died” in Don McLean’s American Pie.
